ONE Mission:

Accelerating community transition towards carbon zero and beyond.

Our Framework

The framework for the One Initiative is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), a holistic approach to sustainability, which addresses environmental, social and economic concerns as one.  Adopted by the UN in 2015, every nation has agreed to implement the goals to achieve a better future by 2030.

ONE Summit

The ONE initiative is a district wide festival of sustainability being held for the first time in the Queenstown Lakes District in 2018. It originated from the desire to look at and highlight the connections between many of our community organizations working on various aspects of sustainability and see how they relate to each other. What we found during this mapping was an amazingly active, engaged community that was ready for change.

NET Zero by 2050

New Zealand is on the path to a low emission, climate resilient future; the Government aims to reduce our emissions to net zero by 2050.

New Zealand’s commitments under the Paris Agreement, is a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 11 per cent below 1990 levels by 2030 (the 2030 target).

Climate change is not just an environmental issue, it has social and economic implications too. Shifting to a low emission economy presents new opportunities for innovation and collaboration.

ONE Summit Events

A finalised programme for ONE Summit will be released on the 17th of September with tickets available to purchase from this website and Event Finder soon after. Below is a small sample of some of the events we have planned for our week long festival of Sustainbility.

During the ONE Summit, we will have an opportunity to look at how we are currently doing business. We will be running a number of workshops in the building, tourism and hospitality sector as well as a general introduction for all businesses around the circular economy.

Food is the biggest contributor to our carbon footprint as an individual. We are going to be looking at fun, inspiring ways to reduce this footprint through local food.

Within the Queenstown Lakes District, water - in the form of lakes, rivers, snow and glaciers, is one of our greatest assets. We have an amazing group of people addressing water use and protection. The ONE Summit provides an opportunity to find out more and get involved with some of these initiatives.

Climate change affects us all. If we all work together as one, let's not just think about stopping, but reversing climate change. The Summit will address how grassroots action at the community level can create real impact to achieve this goal.

The Problem

The problem The climate is changing. Average temperatures are increasing due to human activity, which has driven increasingly high levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions1 . The 2015 Paris Climate Agreement adopted by 195 countries has the goal that the world will limit the increase in global temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius (2 o C) above pre-industrial levels, and will pursue efforts to limit the increase to below 1.5 o C.
