ONE Mission:

Accelerating community transition towards carbon zero and beyond.

One Step at a Time

The One initiative is firmly focused on accelerating our transition to a carbon zero community before 2050. But we also see the climate crisis as providing us with an opportunity to rethink how we govern, work and behave. An opportunity for incremental, citizen driven change at the grassroots to lead us into a better world through partnership and collaboration.

Aligning our best interests with those of the planet is crucial if we want to ensure future generations have a safe world in which to live. We are in the process of learning to tread lightly on this earth and to acknowledge that we are part of a greater system.

The short term goal is zero emissions 2050 - long term it’s about creating a future where we, and every other organism on the planet, has a home and can thrive. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is our GPS on this journey. We know that reaching our destination for 2050 will take a global effort. But every step, no matter how small, counts. It only takes ONE to start.

What We Do…

SEctor-led working groups

We believe that real change comes from grassroots up, not top down. There are currently two sector led working groups set up looking at challenges and solutions within the BUILDING and in the HOSPITALITY sectors. FIND OUT MORE

Community ACTION

Want to take action at the individual level? Check out our community happenings.

  • The ONE SUMMIT is our annual drum beat giving us the opportunity to check in and see how we are doing. FIND OUT MORE.

  • The inaugural Harvest Feast, held in autumn, is an opportunity for the community to gather its bounty and share a meal together using what our gardens and orchards have provided us with and talk about food systems.

We’ll be back for 2020 so keep tuned.

NET Zero by 2050

New Zealand is on the path to a low emission, climate resilient future; the Government aims to reduce our emissions to net zero by 2050.

New Zealand’s commitments under the Paris Agreement, is a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 11 per cent below 1990 levels by 2030 .

Emissions continue to grow

The recently published Greenhouse Gas Inventory showed New Zealand's gross emissions increased 2.2 percent between 2016 and 2017, and increased by 23 percent between 1990 and 2017. This figure is 65% increase if you exclude CO2 sequestration due to forestry.

What’s happening

A finalised programme for ONE Summit 2019 will be released in August with tickets available to purchase from this website soon after. Below is a small sample of some of the events we have planned for our week long festival of action focused sustainability initiatives.

We know that to get to a carbon zero economy, business as usual won’t get us anywhere. We are going to have to start thinking outside of the box. The One Summit provides an opportunity to look at how our carbon footprint as a business and how we can use existing technology and innovation to transform our economy from the inside out. We will be running a number of workshops in the building, tourism and hospitality sector as well as a general introduction for all businesses around the circular economy.

Land users hold the key to us becoming a carbon neutral, resilient nation. To reduce CO2 in the atmosphere, we need to sink carbon into our soils. This discussion will look into best practices around transforming our rural community into our food and climate systems hers.

Within the Queenstown Lakes District, water - in the form of lakes, rivers, snow and glaciers, is one of our greatest assets. We have an amazing group of people addressing water use and protection. The ONE Summit provides an opportunity to find out more and get involved with some of these initiatives.

Climate change affects us all. If we all work together as one, let's not just think about stopping, but reversing climate change. The Summit will address how grassroots action at the community level can create real impact to achieve this goal. You’ll get to see what the Southern Lakes will look like if we do start heating up and the impacts of that on our environment, communities & economy.
