Our economy and how we finance it is rapidly changing and we are entering into a new era. Increased divesting from fossil fuels means greater capital in green funds and the rise of impact investment which looks not just at economic, but also social and environmental returns. Coupled with this is the rise of the social enterprise and the sharing economy. New Zealand is just at the beginning of our Journey. Our three speakers for this discussion have a vast experience in social and impact investing and will give us their views on the exciting developments in New Zealand in this area and answer questions on these topics. Facilitated by Simon Telfer, this conversation will show how using capital differently can help with those big systemic changes we need within our society.

Barry Coates has been involved in responsible investment since the early 1990s and played a leading role in building demand for fair trade in NZ. He has been a leader in sustainability and climate change since the Earth Summit in 1992 and was awarded Sustainability Champion in 2016 from the Sustainable Business Network. He has a Masters from Yale University in management, experience as a business strategy consultant and has been the CEO of charities, most recently Oxfam New Zealand 2003-2014. He was a Green MP 2016-17.

David Woods has held an executive role as Managing Director of a large social finance/impact investing organisation, supporting financial inclusion, agriculture and renewable energy in the developing world with a capital base of EUR 1.2bn. He is currently a Director of Whai Rawa Fund Ltd, a trustee of The Gift Trust, and Chairman of the Impact Enterprise Fund, in addition to sitting on three overseas micro-finance company boards for the Aga Khan Foundation as an independent director. In early October, he will represent New Zealand at the Global Steering Group for Impact Investment Summit to advocate for New Zealand to become part of the Steering Group.

Esther Whitehead is Managing Trustee of the Dyslexia Foundation of NZ and founder of Sustainable Queenstown Charitable Trust, a social enterprise providing sustainability services and fostering community wellbeing through events, workshops and outreach. Esther is currently working with the Ākina Foundation as part of the Impact Initiative, a partnership with the New Zealand Government, to carry out research to help enable a flourishing social enterprise sector in New Zealand. The research is aimed at understanding the capital needs of New Zealand’s social enterprise sector and, based on that understanding, propose solutions to any barriers to capital flow within the sector. Building a social enterprise from grassroots in Queenstown, gives Esther the opportunity to share her first-hand experiences of the challenges and opportunities faced in this sector.

Catherine Leining, one of New Zealand’s expert of climate mitigation policy and who co-leads Motu’s research and engagement programme on “Shaping New Zealand’s Low-Emission Future” will talk about the reality of climate change, our international obligations to reach carbon zero by 2050 and the various paths that can lead us there.

Ben Liley, one of our leading atmospheric scientists, leads NIWA’s research into our solar energy resource, mapping solar energy throughout New Zealand and will talk about our solar potential and our existing capacity to become Carbon Zero in New Zealand.

Finally to bring the discussion back to the How To, Stephen Canny, Group Manager Business and Strategic Projects for Venture Southland, will round out the discussion by talking about how Southland is laying out its pathway to get there through their Zero Carbon Southland initiative.

A discussion to inspire, start conversations, and get us thinking about what we can do as an individual, a business and a community to begin our journey along this path so that our kids don’t get left with the task of doing it.

Peter Harris is the Economic Development Manager at the QLDC since July 2017. As well as economic development he has a background in innovation, entrepreneurship, education and agriculture.

Two of our local fashionistas, Wanaka based personal stylist Trudie Millar and Queenstown’s blogger journalist Frederique Gulcher, are holding a unique, fun, thought-provoking discussion on how we produce and consume fashion in Aotearoa, with events in Wanaka and Queenstown, as part of the ONE Summit festival.

Peri Drysdale, founder of Untouched World, will be talking about her personal journey towards creating one of our most emblematic, global, and sustainable New Zealand brands. In 2007 Untouched World was the first clothing company in the world to be accredited by the United Nations to use the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainability emblem on their products. In May 2015, Untouched World was invited to Paris to assist in the setup of the UNESCO Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development and consulted with the United Nations on the outcomes of the Decade for Sustainable Development (UNDESD). Come along to find out more about Peri’s incredible journey. Some of Untouched World’s beautiful clothes will also be modelled.

The Working as One mini business summit is an opportunity for anyone interested to learn more about the circular economy and at seeing how to take the first steps to apply these principles in the real world. Before 2050, we need to ensure that we have a diverse, thriving and sustainable economy. This morning is for any business that wants to take a few hours to learn more, take stock of where they are at on their path to sustainability, and look at how to accelerate faster towards this goal.

Rachel Brown, CEO of the Sustainable Business Network and based in Auckland, will be making a presentation on the Circular Economy and why being sustainable makes economic sense.

This is going to be followed up by a look at how these principles are being applied in both small and large business structures.
